What was former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan's version of Karabakh resolution? Explains Surenyants

15:41 • 07.07.10

"Of course, Levon Ter-Petrosyan's proposal over the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict was not an ideal one. It cannot be considered as pro-Armenian, but nor can it be considered as anti-Armenian," member of the political board of Republic Party Suren Surenyants told a press conference today.

In his words the best version of the resolution of this conflit he has ever seen was the phase-by-phase one.

"Since then normalization documents are becoming more and more anti-Armenian," said Surenyants, adding that the phase-by-phase settlement secured clear international guarantees for the resolution of the conflict, the issue of Lachin and Kelbajar was being discussed, the status of Nagorno Karabakh would be suspended, and most importantly, according to him at that time there was no such disbalance between Armenia and Azerbaijan which exists now.

The ideal version of the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict Surenyants proposes is the following: some of the liberated areas will be returned, instead Lachin and Kelbajar will be left out of the agenda, Azerbaijan will agree on holding a referendum, the liberated territories that should be surrendered, must be demilitarized, i.e. Azerbaijani soldiers will not return there.
