Aliyev seeks to add fuel to Karabakh conflict to avoid Arab scenario – Turkish media
The Turkish media have been recently casting analyses on possible developments in the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations in the light of the revolutions in the Arab world countries.
Particularly, the Turkish newspaper Radikal says the recent public uprisings in the Arab states are unlikely to be projected on the two countries' relations in the near future.
"The situation in Russian-dominated countries is gradually heating up in the light of the recent revolutions in the Arab world. Opposition activists in Armenia and Azerbaijan have started thinking about revolutions. The Armenian opposition headed by the country's first president, Levon-Ter-Petrosyan, made such an attempt on March 1, but the plan to stage a revolution fell flat as [only] 10,000 people had joined the rally," says the paper.
It further refers to the current situation in Azerbaijan, saying that the youth activists in the country have launched a Facebook campaign following the Egyptian scenario and are planning to organize a mass protest in Baku on March 11 to call for the resignation of President Ilham Aliyev. According to the Turkish publication, the Azerbaijani authorities are using all possible resources to kill the youth initiative.
The pro-government website Qoynar.info has published the list of the young rebels' Armenian friends on Facebook in an attempt to describe them as people collaborating with the enemies. University professors are being warned against joining the campaign.
But the opposition-run media outlets say the Aliyev regime is not restricted to such measures. The authorities have deployed troops in Baku while the Interior Ministry offers contractual work to anyone wishing to assist [in the government's efforts], the Turkish publication says, adding that the Azeri leader is attempting to add fuel to the Karabakh conflict in an attempt to change his country's internal political situation.
As the Arab countries began witnessing massive unrest, Aliyev launched a new anti-corruption campaign in the country, the paper claims, referring to the well-known proverb "The fish always stinks from the head downwards ". It further poses a question whether it is possible to combat corruption in a country like Azerbaijan where one cannot even approach the colossal fortune belonging to the Aliyev clan.
With all this in mind, the Turkish newspaper points out to the existing differences between the developments in the Arab world on the one hand and Armenia and Azerbaijan on the other.
Unlike Egypt where army guarantees the situation, Azerbaijan has police and intelligence which act as guarantors, the paper comments. Hence, it says, the Azerbaijani army cannot call for Aliyev's resignation. Besides, the paper adds, Arab countries have an Islamic opposition which is a major driving force for revolutionary movements, whereas in Azerbaijan, this opposition is just taking shape.
