Serious politicians speak of concessions now - expert
Over the recent years, serious politicians have been discussing the possibility of making concessions on Nagorno Karabakh, Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan has said.
"While 3-4 years ago we could hear people saying that not a single millimeter of Karabakh or the liberated lands would be given [to Azerbaijan], serious politicians speak about concessions now. This shows dynamics," Iskandaryan told the Caucasus 2010 Conference on Tuesday.
The expert made the statement has he expressed concerns over the current situation on the Nagorno Karabakh-Azerbaijan Contact Line, particularly the recent activeness of Azerbaijani snipers. He added in the meantime that no serious changes have been observed in the conflict settlement process.
"The trilateral meetings between presidents and foreign ministers continue. But they later return to Azerbaijan and continue making threats and triggering aggressions on the Line of Contact," he said.
The expert noted that the economic factor greatly affects politics.
"Given the increasing social tension, I don't even know whether or not to trust official figures, but what we have now is not even comparable to the economic growth we had seven or eight years ago. It was the social tension that triggered the March 1 political turmoil," he said, adding that the social-political unrest is now assuming new forms as measures are being taken to combat shadow economy.
Speaking of political concessions, the analyst referred to the ideology of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) which used to have what he called a strict and decisive stance.
"Those detained on political grounds are being set free little by little, with the authorities pretending that they have nothing to do with what they have proposed," he said. "Such processes may greatly affect the parliamentary election results, ," he added.
Speaking of the developments in the Arab world and the possibility of the Arab scenario repeating itself in Armenia, the expert noted that much before the uprisings in Arab countries, Armenians had demonstrated certain activeness, launching a large-scale campaign against the re-opening of foreign language schools and the plans to level the open-air hall of Moscow cinema.
"Some 30%-35% of the Armenian population now uses Internet and that can already be considered a social rebellion," he said.
The Caucasus 2010 conference was organized in Yerevan on Wednesday upon the initiative of the Caucasus Institute. The discussion was devoted to the situation in the three South Caucasus republics (Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan). The situation in each country was addressed separately.
