Emigrants get culture shock – psychologist

Emigration is a most serious problem, and it is a most superficial approach to say it has social causes, the psychologist Karine Nalchajyan told journalists in Yerevan, Jan. 10.
According to her, a section of Armenia's population, which I fairly well-off, is willing to emigrate as well.
"This section develops a desire to alienate itself from it homeland and people, and such people mostly seek prosperity," Nalchajyan said.
Since such people are willing to emigrate, they encounter a psychological problem of leaving their homeland. The only way out for them is to discredit their homeland to be subconsciously able to leave, the psychologist said.
Emigrants get a culture shock, which has nothing to do with personal prosperity.
"Scientists say it takes about 20 years to get over this culture shock. However, there exists 'a return shock' as well. A person may return to homeland, but fail to adapt. And this person leaves the homeland never to return," Nalchajyan said.
