US Senate’s Genocide resolution specific policy action ‘not limited to Turkey’ – Karen Bekaryan
The US Senate’s move to adopt a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide arises questions which, in the long run, demand a close attention at least to foreign policy planning affairs, political analyst Karen Bekaryan said Friday in a televised a speech, describing the measure as a specific message to Turkey and other allies.
“We can make no doubt that the Turkey-US relations have now entered into a period of crisis, with those sentiments unquestionably playing their role also in the American society. But to adopt a sanctions resolution the very same day while remaining dissatisfied – with an ally in NATO and the region in general – gives food for thought as to whether the message is addressed to Turkey alone,” he said during the broadcast Between the Lines aired by ArmNews TV channel.
The analyst noted that Washington’s anti-Turkish sanctions coincided with the passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution by the House of Representatives (back in October), with the Senate move preceding the adoption of a draft resolution proposing sanctions against Ankara.
The analyst dismissed any connection with dimestic political developments, particularly attempts by Presient Donald Trump team to attract an electorate in the runup to the 2020 presidential elections.
“The pre-electoral process in the United States has not yet entered into its logic in a full scale. Experience shows that issues of the kind gain momentum at the most criucial moments in an attempt to impact the ballots. Hence this can be conidered in the specter of causes but never be directly treated as a main cause,” he said.
