Top managers of Wizz Air, a Hungarian low-cost airline serving destinations across Europe, North Africa and Middle East, on Monday announced plans for launching flights from Yerevan in April to connect the Armenian capital with other destinations at uncomparably cheap prices.

Vienna (Austria) and  Vilnius (Lithuania) will be the initial destinations, for which the company will offer air ticket prices starting from €24.99. ″Our tickets will be available only for online sale as opposed to other companies. For passengers who do not need luggage no pay extra fares will be necessary,” Andras Rado, Wiz Air's corporate manager, told reporters in Yerevan.

Elaborating on the company's advantages, he said that they intend to increase the aircrafts' number to 300 from the current 120 to expand the network. In his words, the airline now serves 153 airports globally (including Armenia).

″We are the greenest airline in Europe. The carbohydrate emissions per passenger are 57.2 grams for every single kilometer, so our task now is to reduce air pollution,″ he said, adding that they plan a further expansion to increase the number of destinations from Armenia.

The businessman also stressed the importance of competition, noting that an Austrian company too, carries out flights from Yerevan to Vienna.

Head of the Civil Aviation Committee Tatevik Revazyan said their agency did not take a specific action to attract the company.

″We have tried to be more flexible to change the law and [to revise] the exit tax because for a company offering tickets for €25 an exit tax of €20 is unacceptable,″ she said, adding that their principles for encouraging the Hungarian lowcoster's flights were the same as for other international airlines. Admitting that it normally takes years to bring an air company to Armenia, Revazyan said they finalized the deal with Wizz Air within very short timeframes to arrange the cheap flights.
