Heritage party not dead to rise from the dead – vice-chairman

Vice-Chairman of the Heritage party Armen Martirosyan does not believe the talks about Heritage party Chairman Raffi Hovannisian’s return to politics are to the point.

“We are not dead to rise from the dead. We are one of the most active forces in Armenia’s political and civil arenas,” he told Tert.am.

It was the Barev Yerevan (Hello Yerevan) bloc that called on citizens to protest the fare rise, Martirosyan added.

The talks are orchestrated propaganda. “It is not a new situation that has, all of a sudden, made us become active.”

Raffi Hovannisian’s leaving Armenia’s political arena has been talked about since 1992. So this campaign requires special comments, Martirosyan said.

“Dark PR has for some reasons been practiced against Raffi Hovannisian and the Heritage party. The problem, however, is parties’ different political orientation rather than the party system itself. In the case of the Heritage party and its leader I do not think this struggle can be in conflict with civil struggle,” he said. Raffi Hovannisian was the winner in Armenia’s latest presidential election and it was only because of large-scale election frauds that he did not become Armenia’s president.

Despite everything, the Heritage party has duties to perform. “On September 21, Raffi Hovannisian will present his approaches,” Martirosyan said.

As to the claims that the Heritage party leader “used up people’s energy,” Martirosyan said that the persons that make the claims should have been present in Freedom Square at the right moment. They should have proposed joint programs instead of pursuing a policy of discrediting Raffi Hovannisian. Many “sowed the first seeds of apathy” instead of criticizing Armenia’s incumbent authorities before the presidential election.

The Yerevan Municipality accepted the Heritage party’s application for rallies August 1 to 22.
