Georgia officially completes registration of candidates

A total of 23 presidential candidates have been registered to run in Georgia’s presidential elections, which will be held on the 27th of October. 

This is the largest number of candidates since the country held its first presidential election in 1990, reports Press TV.

However, recent public opinion polls show three candidates in the lead. Presented by country’s Prime Minister, former Minister of Education Giorgi Margvelashvili promises to solve unemployment problem in the country and supports Georgia’s integration into NATO and the European Union, but also plans to start dialogue with Russia. This member of the ruling Georgian Dream coalition has 39% of likely voters as of now.


MP David Bakradze, a candidate of current President Saakashvili’s United National Movement party follows with 18% of likely voters. He believes that the upcoming presidential poll is not about change of government, but it must secure that all leading posts in the country are not accumulated in one party’s hands.

Only 7% of likely voters named Nino Burjanadze, former speaker of Georgian parliament. Experienced politician, Burjanadze says she will be able to restore relations with Georgia’s breakaway regions, at the same time having good relations with Russia and the West. Her main message, however, she says is restoration of justice, meaning punishment for President Saakashvili and his team. Burjanadze does not trust the opinion poll results.

The presidential campaign in the country is in full play. No matter, which candidate is now in the lead, but the second round of election will be required if none of them receives more than half of the cast votes.

Still, there are some 26% of voters, who answered “don’t know”, “refuse to answer” or “no candidate” according to the recent poll.

Experts have said this number is large enough to determine both - the final results of the first round or whether there will be a runoff.
