Russia offers Ukraine $100 for 1,000 cubic meters gas discount, Ukraine declines – Yatsenyuk

Ukraine rejected Moscow's offered discount of $100 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas finalized by the Russian government and it insisting that any contract explicitly include a market price, the Voice of Russia reports.

"We are standing on the same positions: revise the contract and establish a market price for gas," Yatsenyuk said in opening remarks at a Ukrainian government meeting on Wednesday, adding: "We aren't going down that road again."

Ukraine's Naftogaz is not planning to pay its debt for gas until a "package agreement" is reached, Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan told journalists.

"Until a package agreement is approved, in general, no," Prodan said as he headed for the next round of gas talks at European
Commission offices in Brussels.

The day before, Russia's Gazprom said it would delay imposing advance payment requirements on Ukraine for one week, until June 16.

The European Commission will "motivate" the Ukrainian side to pay its debt for Russian gas, European Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger told journalists ahead of the latest round of gas talks between Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission.

Asked whether the European Commission would insist that Ukraine pay its gas debt, Oettinger said he was only an intermediary and would motivate Ukraine to pay the debt, not insist.

Oettinger said he thought the positions of the two sides would move closer to each other.

Bilateral talks were scheduled to be held before the three-party talks at the European Commission on Wednesday morning.

So far only Oettinger is at the European Commission building; the Russian and Ukrainian delegations have yet to arrive.
