Armenia’s premier visits Meridian jewelry free economic zone

Armenia’s Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan has visited the Meridian jewelry free economic zone to see the organization of diamond cutting, jewelry production and watch-making.

The government’s decision of February 27, 2014, approves the AJA free economic zone CJSC as organizer of the jewelry free economic zone. The AJA company has launched its activities.

Premier Abrahamyan toured the building area, was told about the work done and inquired about plans. Gagik Gevorkyan, Chairman of the Armenian Jewellers Association, told the premier that the company is investing around $14m in the renovation of production shops, creation of infrastructure, purchase of equipment and improvement of the adjacent area. Foreign companies are expected to launch their activities in the free economic zone, with 1,000 to 1,200 jobs to be created. Tentative agreements have been signed with eight companies from Russia, the United States, Great Britain and Jordan. The companies are expected to export their goods to the United States, Russia, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, India, Czech Republic, Thailand, Hong Kong, Austria Belgium, etc. Negotiations with 12 other countries are in progress.

An exhibition center with an area of 10,000 sq. meters will work in the free area zone. This October, the center will host the Yerevan Show 2014 annual jewelry exhibition and an AJA annual convention.
