Aliyev sounds like medieval despot – Armenian parliament vice speaker

The vice speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly slams the Azerbaijani leader’s belligerent rhetoric as very ridiculous, considering it characteristic to the speeches made by the medieval despots.

At the same, Eduard Sharmazanov calls for astonished European institutions to get familiarized with them to draw corresponding parallels, also with the statement by Adolf Hitler.

“It is surprising and ridiculous that a state’s leader - even the leader of Azerbaijan which is a member of the Council of Europe – who himself is qualified as a diplomat, can permit himself a speech with such a vocabulary,” he told Tert.am, describing Ilham Aliyev’s recent speeches as attempts to preach fascism and racism.

Sharmazanov further pointed to possible regional threats, calling for a universal understanding of the problem. “The more they turn a blind eye, the more the provkems,” he added.

Recalling the Azerbaijani leader’s speech and behavior at the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly’s latest session, the parliament official noted, “History is for learning lessons. Europe in the past turned a blind eye to Adolf Hitler and in [19]38, they signed a treaty, but a year after the Municj deal, Adolf Hitler embarked on the Second World War which was an extremely big calamity for history. If they want to warm a serpent, that’s their own problem. I only state historical truths and the fact that Azerbaijan today is a dictatorship. Let’s change the times and characters; Adolf Hitler would make the same statements in the [19]30’s,” he added.


In his speech at the meeting, Aliyev said that the country was facing increasing pressure against the backdrop of foreign forces’ dislike of the independent policies in Azerbaijan. He cited attempts by several countries to represent Azerbaijan was a non-democratic and backward country as a reason behind the “propaganda war”. Aliyev said that his country has democratic freedoms, a free society and a free press.

Considering the Azerbaijani leader’s promise to re-establish the “historical truth” and return “historical lands” (Aliyev claimed that Armenian regions stretching from capital Yerevan to the southern region of Syunik historically belonged to Azerbaijan) very reidiculous, Sharmazanov, who is also a spokesperson for the ruling Republican Party of Armenia recommended reading once again ancient Greek and Roman historians, including Strabon.

“And [Aliyev] will see that not only Yerevan, Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh but also the major part of the country he rules today have nothing to do with his historical homeland,” Sharmazanov added.

Asked to comment on yesterday’s subversive act on the Line of Contact, the parliament official said he finds that the entire responsibility for that lies upon the Azerbaijani government. “The Azerbaijani authorities alone are to blame for the blood of both the Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers, because the Azerbaijani authorities and their leader have for many years been preaching anti-Armenian policies, fascism and racism. And Aliyev has become the hostage of the false ideology he has himself initiated. Aliyev’s policies remind me of the policies pursued and the statements made by Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitlet,” հe added.
