Armenia survived history’s cross-roads to live up to 21st century – Serzh Sargsyan

Despite the losses suffered over millennia, the Armenian nation has survived and managed to overcome the cross-roads of history to pave its way to the 21st century, Serzh Sargsyan said in a speech the institute ancient manuscripts’ (Matenadaran).


The Armenian leader visited the institute on Friday to attend the exhibition “Surviving Manuscripts” and the presentation of the film “Kemalist Massacres”, reports the presidential press service.


“I wish to extend my word of gratitude and reverence to the memory of Fifth Catholics of All Armenians Gevorg and all the clergymen whose tremendous efforts helped rescue at least a minuscule part of those precious monuments. This is the formula of our eternity, and this is why we have lived up to the 21st century despite suffering losses and wearing ourselves out,” he said.

The president had a gift, a 17th century illustrated Gospel (originally entitled "Red Gospel") with manuscripts and marginal decorations. Passed from hand to hand in the 19th century, it eventually happened to reach Baghdasar Shahbasov (from Javakhk), who in 1918 rescued the manuscript from Turkish invaders, moving it out of church.


“For understandable reasons, I couldn’t come here empty-handed today, so I have brought a 17th century manuscript entitled "Red Gospel", which was rescued at the price of tremendous efforts in 1918. For almost 170 years, this Gospel was kept at the St Hovhannes church of Kars, and I now hand it over to Matenadaran with a deep belief,” he said, considering the institute the safest home for the ancient book.
