Armenia negotiates Iran-Armenia railway funding with China - minister
If China finds an Iran-Armenia railway project profitable, it will sponsor the construction of the “Armenian” section o the railway, Armenia’s Minister of Economy Karen Chshmarityan stated following a cabinet meeting on Friday. However, the Armenian and Chinese sides have not yet reached a final decision on financing of the project.
“It is a question of the Chinese side implementing the project. That is, they will consider the project’s profitability and, if the find it profitable, the will start financing,” the minister said.
The Armenian section of the railway is estimated at US $3.2bn.
The “core” of the Iran-Armenian railway project is that it will connect china with Europe.
“Geographically we can see that Iran has more connections with Afghanistan, with operating railways, which should be used as well.”
According to the minister, the Chinese premier has asked a deputy minister of commerce and the Chinese co-chair of the bilateral economic cooperation committee to coordinate the activities with Armenia to move forward with the economic-technical justifications.
“It was, by the way, mentioned that it is a specific and historical part of the Great Silk Road,” he said, adding that the discussions were held in a constructive atmosphere.
Cshmarityan further addressed the areas of cooperation in which China was proactively interested and over which specific agreements have been already reached. Those areas, according to him, have to do with the introduction of new technologies in concrete production, private companies’ joint businesses, as well as Air China’s plans to launch a flight route with Armenia.
“All the activities had been already accomplished, and we were at the stage of making a specific decision. After my letter, the Chinese side unveiled the list of the companies interested in those areas. So we have sent the invitations and are waiting for their reply,” he added.
