Planned lowering of natural gas prices not to affect family budgets in Armenia – economists
Economists in Armenia are skeptical about the the government-proposed plan to lower the natural gas tariffs
At a news conference on Wednesday, President of the Consumers Union Armen Poghosyan said he finds the proposed tariff very insignificant despite the society’s increasing interest.
“Sixty percent of the family expenses in Armenia account for food, with 28% going to other expenses, so no money is practically left for social and spiritual life,” he said, noting that in developed countries, families spending more than 25% of their income are considered to be below the poverty line.
“Hence the slight decrease in the natural gas [prices] will not affect the family budget,” Poghsyan added.
Karlen Khachatryan, another economist also attending the news conference, said he has observed a decline trend in the gas tariffs over the recent years.
“[The price] has become 40% less expensive in the past couple of years,” he added.
The economist said he thinks that the problems in Armenia as due a failure to consider systemic solutions.
He noted further that against the increasing prices for consumer products and services, the population’s income is not increasing.
“The problem is that we do not have a clearly arranged economic development policy. What is being done now is to my mind limited to patched-up policies,” Khachatryan said.
