Bill on free trade zone with Iran circulated

Armenia’s Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, at a regular meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, reached an agreement on a free trade zone with Iran, Armenia’s Minister of Economy Artsvik Minasyan told reporters on Thursday.

“The idea of creating a free trade zone with Iran was suggested long ago, but it has remained unrealized. During his latest visit, the premier reached an agreement on a free trade zone with Iran.  It is most important because it affords opportunities to establish good contacts in terms of services and production – both between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and for exporting domestic products, making use of the trade conditions Armenia has with Europe, the United States, Canada and other states,” the minister said.

Asked if the EEU Commission and Iran have reached an agreement on a free trade zone, Mr Minasyan said that the agreement was reached on the Armenian premier’s initiative, and Armenia’s major task now is to ensure legal framework.

“A bill on a free trade has been circulated and is now being discussed,” the minister said.

An EEU-Iran agreement must first of all be on the initiatives of Armenia and Iran, and Armenia has undertaken an initiative.

Mr Minasyan could not say anything about the deadlines. However, he said, the free trade zone is going to be a production and high-quality services zone.

Asked if Armenia will be able to have a free trade zone with Iran that would be independent of Russia, Mr Minasyan said that Armenia originally had this status, and Iran does not have to sign any additional documents with the EEU.
