Armenian politician proposes coalition deal for appointing Vanadzor mayor

The Bright Armenia party’s leader on Monday proposed his colleagues from the Prosperous Armenia and Armenian Renaissance parties to form a coalition in Vanadzor to elect the city’s mayor.

 

At a news conference in the third largest city, Edmon Marukyan said he finds that that the authorities suffered a crucial defeat in the recent municipal election despite the “carousel vote-buying”, and “misuse of administrative resources” during the campaign.


In his words, the votes by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and its coalition partner, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D), will not suffice for appointing a mayor if those parties unite to propose a joint candidate. Elaborating on the election outcome, Marukyan noted that the RPA received only 13 votes without bonuses, with Bright Armenia having 10 mandates with bonuses in the municipal council. The  Armenian Renaissance and Prosperous Armenia received respectively five and three mandates with bonuses; the ARF-D secured only two mandates without any bonus. “If [the said parties] unite, we will secure 218 mandates, so we will make the RPA an opposition [political force] in Vanadzor,” he added.
