Flawless 18.04-carat Rockefeller emerald is sold at auction to famed jeweller Harry Winston for $5.5million

A flawless Colombian emerald once owned by the legendary Rockefeller family sold during a Christie's auction for more than $5.5million Tuesday, the Daily Mail reports.


The 18.04-carat emerald was purchased by famed jeweller Harry Winston for a grand total of $5,511,500, which equates to about $305,000 per carat broken down. 


The rare untreated emerald was originally bought by John D. Rockefeller from Van Cleef & Aprels in 1930 as the centerpiece of a brooch.


He purchased it as a gift for his wife Abby Aldrich Rockefeller.


But after the socialite's death in 1948, the brooch was disassembled and individual emeralds from the setting were distributed among the Rockefeller children.

The couple's youngest son, David Rockefeller, took the largest emerald and he commissioned famous jewelry designer Raymond Yard to set it onto a diamond and platinum ring. 


Yard had worked with other wealthy New York families like the Vanderbilts, the DuPonts and the Woolworths. 


The gorgeous ring has since been passed to several other owners over the years, but it is said to still have its distinguished look. 


The emerald has been described by the American Gemological Laboratory as 'exceptional', since it possesses an 'unusual combination of size, provenance, absence of treatment and quality factors [that contribute] favorably to its rarity and desirability'. 


The emerald is quite unique as it has never received any type of enhancement while most emeralds require an oil treatment to enhance their brilliance and color. 

 

Prior to the auction, Rahul Kadakia, Christie's International Head of Jewellery, told CNBC: “This is supremely natural beauty. This truly is the finest emerald that's ever come up for sale at auction, or anywhere else in the world.”

 

The gemstone is the highlight of the auction house's 'Magnificent Jewels' sale.
