Only known photo of JFK with rumored fling Marilyn Monroe hits auction block 56 years after her death
Sunday marks the 56-anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death at just 36-years-old by barbiturate overdose, while the only known surviving photo of herself with President John F. Kennedy is up for auction, the Daily Mail reports.
Monroe's sudden death in August of 1962 rocked the nation, as the vivacious singer, model and actress had just sang her iconic “Happy Birthday Mister President” to JFK at Madison Square Garden in May, weeks before his 45-birthday.
The performance only fueled rumors of an affair between the president and the actress.
With no other photos from that evening, or any other day, this one shows Monroe and the sitting president together. The image had apparently escaped the clutches of the Secret Service who were busy snatching way any negatives of the pair at the festivities together.
The diligent secret service missed just this one negative.
Now, the print of the negative is up for auction with Leland Auction House, with a starting bid of $2,500.
In the image, Monroe is between the president with his face obscured as his back is to the camera in the shot, and she is also standing with Robert F. Kennedy, whose face also obscured. He is in the foreground.
She was also rumored to have had an affair with John's brother Robert as well.
The photo was taken that night she sang to JFK, at the after-party at the Manhattan townhouse of Hollywood exec Arthur Krim.
It was snapped by official White House photographer Cecil Stoughton.
The negative was discovered after Stoughton died in 2008, with the auction house claiming it is the only surviving version of the photo that Stoughton printed himself from the original negative.
Stoughton told filmmaker Keya Morgan he had kept it a secret for years because he didn't want to upset JFK's wife, Jackie Kennedy.
Bidding for the photo on Lelands.com ends August 17.
