Russia troubled by ‘simmering situation’ in Armenia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed his country’s concerns over the domestic political situation in Armenia, questioning the expediency of the criminal probe into the March 1-2, 2008 post-electoral turmoil.
“What troubles us is the simmering situation in Armenia, particularly the [recently launched] investigation[s] into events that trace back to 10 years, and the continuing arrests. We certainly find it Armenia’s domestic affair, but want really this kind of affairs to rely strongly on the laws and the Constitution and be resolved within the shortest possible timeframes to enable Armenia to focus on creative development issues,” he said at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations , according the news agency TASS.
Lavrov said his country is interested in the political stability in states "which are Russia's partners and strategic allies".He highlighted the importance of the stability component also as a key contributory factor to socio-economic development.
“That’s all we are trying to do in the economic domain through our economic integration bloc, the Eurasian Economic Union, and in the field of [national security] - through the Collective Security Treaty Organization,” he added.
Lavrov said that Russia has been closely following the developments in Armenia since Nikol Pashinyan’s election as the country’s prime minister but ruled out any intervention in domestic policies.
“I can’t say, though, that the other foreign players act accordingly,” he added.
Russia’s top diplomat also addressed the scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Pashinyan and President Vladimir Putin.
“A new meeting is planned for the near future. What we need to understand is the new Armenian leader’s evaluation of his country’s development perspectives. We are not indifferent to the state’s [ability] to fulfill its functions in the frameworks of the CSTO in this kind of new situation,” the minister added.
