Mnatsakanyan: Armenia rules out alternative to peace over Artsakh

Armenia remains committed to its principles in the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) peace talks, ruling our any alternative to a peaceful and negotiated settlement, Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan said today, commenting on his recent meeting with the Azerbaijani foreign minister.

Speaking to reporters at the military pantheon Yerablur, Mnatsakanyan also referred to international mediators’ statement issued after his talks with Elmar Mammadyarov in Paris.

He said that it repeated the ealier calls for confidence-building as a key contributing factor to future peace.

“We have repeatedly stated that we need an atmosphere contributing to peace, because negotiating peace against the backdrop of hostility and escalations is, understandably, impossible. All the peacebuilding factors are important and essential,” he added.

Mnatsakanyan was in Yerablur with a delegation of high-ranking officials attending a cmmemoration ceremony to honor the hero martyrs of the Nagorno-Karabakh liberation war.

He said that Armenia never backed away from its declared principles, attaching a major priority to a peaceful conflict settlement, and the status quo of Artsakh.  

Asked to comment on Mammadyarov’s earlier statement highlighting a “mutual understanding” between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the minister said he believes that the Azerbaijani official hinted the "clear approaches" pursued by the two countries’ leaderships.

As for the Minsk Group co-chairs’ call for preparing the populations for peace, Mnatsakanyan agreed that it is an urgent necessity “emphasized repeatedly before”.

“We have expressed [our position on] this as a principle, so there isn’t absolutely anything new. We work towards peace, but our determination – which we have never lost - must not be called into question. Peace has no alternative, as any alternative to peace would imply a catastrophe,” the minister added.
