Council of Europe's human rights chief pledges support to democracy reforms in Armenia

Christos Giakoumopoulos, the Council of Europe's Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, promised the organization's continued support to Armenia as he met with the parliament speaker earlier today to discuss cooperation projects, reports the National Assembly's press service.
Greeting the European official, Ararat Mirzoyan said that the country essentially prioritizes the paerntership with the Council, appreciating its assistance to the strengthening of democracy and rule of law. He added that they are actively collaborating also with the CoE Office in Yerevan, showing a high respect for the commitments undertaken to ensure the desired progress in all the assigned areas.
Mirzoyan noted that the non-violent ''Velvet Revolution'' in April ''paved the country's way'' to a better protection of human rights, securing higher standards for the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Thanking the parliament speaker for a warm reception, Giakoumopoulos appreciated the effective cooperation with the Armenian authorities and the joint programs impelemented over the past couple of years.
Addressing the CoE Action Plan for Armenia, he said that its promising outcomes inspire them with real hopes that the country will be "committed to embark on the full-fledged implementation" of the second project – proposing extensive and in-depth reforms.
