Real processes over Karabakh 'help reduce frontline tensions' – opinion
Any real process in the peace talks over Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) helps reduce escalations along the Line of Contact, Mikayel Zolyan, a lawmaker of My Step political bloc, said today, commenting on the recent high-level Armenian-Azerbaijani summit.
“[Prime Minister] Nikol Pashinyan does, willy-nilly, dictate a specific agenda in Azerbaijan, which is even internal in essence,” he told reporters at the National Assembly, emphasizing the conceptual element in the debate.
In his words, Armenia can negotiate just in order to keep the process going “to raise the pivotal points and outline the key trends” being sketched in the course of the current dialogue.
“Twenty-five years have passed ever since [the start of the Nagorno-Karabakh liberation movemens], the period being practically longer than the time lapse between World War I and the start of World War II. The Minsk Group format helped avert a big war; we did certainly see the four-day April war, different incidents and tragic deaths from time to time, but there wasn’t any big war in essence. So the Minsk Group format lived up to our expectations. The question is whether it has brought us an inch closer to the settlement of this problem? Were we farther from a real settlement back in [19]95 than we are today? Not, certainly,” he said, highlighting two possible scenarios – either imitating a peace process or arriving at final answers to all the open questions.
