Zhamanak: US-Armenia symbolic session; 'Yes & No answers' from Washington
The Armenian-American strategic dialogue is opening in Yerevan later today in an interagency session expected to bring together delegations led by Grigory Hovhannisyan, a deputy foreign minister (who formerly served as the Armenian ambassador in Washington) and George Kent, the US assistant secretary in the European and Eurasian Bureau, the paper says, citing the Foreign Ministry.
What makes the event symbolic is its timing, coinciding with the lead-up to the first anniversary of the 'Velvet Revolution ', more precisely, its formal victory. Noting that May 8 was exactly the date when Nikol Pashinyan was elected the prrime minister of Armenia (after weeks of leading a civil the civil disobedience campaign to unseat the former authorities), the paper says that the US-Armenia relations have been under a special spotlight ever since, especially in the terms of their understandability and context in the new situation and perspective.
The situation is controversial both politically and economically, the paper says, citing US National Security Adviser John Bolton's visit to Armenia in autumn (and his proposal in connection with the supply of US armament) on the one hand, and the United States' interest in making investments in Lydian Armenia, a major mineral exploitation and development company based in the southern Syunik region.
Meantime, the paper highlights the "visible and tangible propaganda" against the Velvet Revolution in the Russian media - coupled with the evaluations that the new authorities do not have a strategy to develop relations with the West.
Against the backdrop of the really ''relative and controversial situation'', the paper highlights the increasing significance of the US-Armenia agenda in both the economic, and civil and the political domains, stressing the necessity of fresh efforts to start the bilateral relations from a scratch.
