Bashar al-Assad urges Syrian-Armenians ‘to return home’
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday received Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia in Damascus to discuss the situation in the country, and issues and programs dealing with the local Armenians.
At the meeting which lasted more than one hour, Assad urged the Syrian-Armenian refugees to return to the country to rebuild their homes. The Syrian leader highly appreciated the Armenian community’s positive contribution to the country, adding he treats them as exemplary citizens “vested with equal rights and obligations” in relation to Syria.
The patriarch, for his part, thanked Assad for the financial support to the renovation of the Forty Martyrs Church, reminding him also of the Syrian people's warm hospitality to Armenian Genocide survivors in the early 20th centiry. He said that the Armenian community, which feels firmly attached to Syria, is determined and highly motivated to embark upon the rebuilding of the country.
The catholicos reminded Assad of the political and cultural significance of the Armenian community for both Syria and Armenia, highlighting at the same time the national campaign for justice. He extended his gratitude to the Syrian government for the full solidarity with the Armenian Cause.
The delegation included Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian, the prelate of the Armenians in Aleppo, Avetis Kitanian, the Lebanese minister of tourism, Nora Arisian and Zhirayr Reisian, Armenian members of the Syrian parliament, and others.
