Iran seeking to 'disrupt new US-led alliance’ in Persian Gulf – expert

Iran is directing its diplomatic efforts towards disrupting the plans to create a new US-led alliance in the Persian Gulf, a Yerevan-based expert in Iranian studies said on Sunday, commenting on the decision to cancel the trilateral summit among the Iranian, Russian and Azerbaijani top leaders in Sochi.  

In an interview with Tert.am, Armen Israelyan also highlighted Israel’s possible engagement in the project. “Given that a joint statement was to be issued at the end of the meeting - outlining, as you know, the key points for the parties - Iran might have wished to address the issue, to which Azerbaijan was, for instance, opposed. That, in all probablity, was the problem that caused them to exclude the Persian Gulf from the geopolitical agenda before the meeting,” he noted.

Baku, Tehran and Moscow were scheduling a trilateral summit in Sochi, Russia later this month to bring to agenda a range of issues addressing directly also the interests of Armenia.

Israelyan agreed that the decision to cancel the summit was somewhat unexpected. “Azerbaijan’s minister of economy recently visited Iran to arrange the meeting. So its cancellation came really as a surprise. Iran normally announces official visits on the very last day, and they had actually confirmed that Rohani would travel to Sochi [to attend the summit].

"The Iranian state media later cited [Azerbaijani President Ilham] Aliyev’s poor health as a reason, yet it is now hard to predict what caused them to actually cancel [the summit] ” he said.

A key issue on the meeting agenda dealt with the construction of the North-South energy corridor to ensure the synchronization of the Iranian and Russian electric power systems through Azerbaijani infrastructures. Another major issue outlined procedures for giving the Azerbaijani component a coordinated status in the international logistic transport corridor.

The meeting was cancelled due to technical reasons.
