Opposition MP blasts ‘zero progress’ in Armenian diplomacy after revolution

The Armenian diplomacy hasn’t seen major changes since last year’s "Velvet Revolution", with no new achievements having added to what we had under the previous authorities, a senior opposition lawmaker said Thursday, blaming the current government for a "slow progress'.

In his speech at the National Assembly, the leader of the opposition Bright Armenia faction, Edmon Marukyan, said that Armenia, as a member state of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), “is the only country within the Russia-led military bloc” that embarked on a deep cooperation with NATO long before the power transition processes. He noted that the country is also the only EAEU member state to sign a cooperation agreement with the European Union.  

“So what have we added to all this in the past one and a half year after the revolution? All we can offer as a product for sale abroad is democracy, freedom of speech and the values proclaimed after the revolution. This adds certainly to the existing achievements, but the outcome is not something I sum up now.”

Marukyan cited the existing shortcomings in the foreign policy priorities, which he said should be “constitutionally elaborated and implemented by the Government.”

He further highlighted state sovereignty issues, calling attention also to problems in parliamentary diplomacy. In his words, the parliamentarians are “amid active expectations” in practically all the formats, including the CSTO, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the North-Atlantic Alliance. Marukyan called for proactive efforts to rule out complications, stressing at the same time the importance of an active engagement in all the necessary processes.

“We have the real opportunity today. Our members in parliament have enough capacity to allow us to pursue an active parliamentary diplomacy,” the lawmaker added.
