168 Zham: US raises demand for Armenian troops' withdrawal from Syria

The United States’ government has reportedly urged Armenia to withdraw its troops from Syria’s territory.

The paper cites recent reports on a closed-door meeting between the defense and foreign ministers, claiming that the conversation evolved around the military contingent sent to the country (a move which is thought to have evoked the Washington authorities' negative reaction). 

Notably enough, says the paper, the message was conveyed to the Armenian authorities shortly after the visit of Nikolay Patrushev, the Russian Security Council's secretary, who reportedly proposed a plan for expanding the contingent.

Citing its sources, the paper says that Washington raised its complaints through Mher Margaryan, Armenia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, insisting on potentially deteriorating relations with Yerevan due to the troops' presence. The same sources also reportedly claimed that the corresponding US agencies warned against using the demining equipment provided earlier by the administration.

The message voiced by the Armenian envoy is thus thought to have dominated the confidential meeting agenda, giving FM Zohrab Mnatsakanyan “food for thought” as to his future response to the US colleagues.

At their meeting with the diplomat, the two ministers tried to consider possible ways out, says the paper, adding that either scenario may pose challenges to Armenia.  Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan is said to have strongly opposed to the United States’ reported demand.

″As to what [Prime Minister] Nikol Pashinyan will decide and how he will respond to the Russian and US demands is unclear for now. Yet the scenario of exacerbating political challenges - after the move to send to Syria troops bearing the Armenian flag - was warned by both opposition politicians and experts,″ comments the paper.
