Zhamanak: Developing cooperation with US-Armenian community ‘pivotal’ to interstate relations

The continuing cooperation with the US-Armenian community is going to play a pivotal role in the context of the political relations with the Washington authorities, the paper says, citing recent comments by George Kent, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the European and Eurasian Bureau at the US Department of State.

In an interview with the Armenian service of VOA News, the US official expressed positive hopes about the continuing partnership with the “developing and prospering state”, especially after the “Velvet Revolution”.

The visit is thought to be important particularly against the backdrop of Nikol Pashinyan’s scheduled trip to the United States, as the premier is traveling to the country on a working visit to attend the upcoming UN General Assembly. Obviously though, Pashinyan’s trip is perceived more in the context of the US-Armenia relations and agenda, with no political implications being observed under the circumstances. The paper claims that even the scheduled meeting with Armenians in Glendale (which the premier said is going to be a big assembly) is part of the logical chain underlying the bilateral interstate relations.

With the US-Armenian community being politically the most influential and representing the world’s biggest (if not the only) superpower, the fact is gaining an increasing significance not only in the patriotic or emotional sense but also in the geopolitical perspective. The paper highlights the flexibility given to the United States in the regional policy context (given a range of delicate issues with such countries as Turkey, a member state of NATO, Russia, a country maintaining multi-layer relations with Armenia or Iran, which is currently in confrontations with Washington, etc.), adding that the same policies would not so readily apply to Georgia.

“Consequently the agenda of Armenia and the US-Armenian Diaspora is practically not only pan-Armenian but also global in practice, as it has to touch upon that kind of sizable issues and problems. And hence Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to the United States must be the starting point indicating that opportunity or potential,” writes the paper.
