Pashinyan’s proposal on Karabakh ‘dangerously undermines’ Armenia’s positions - statement

Nikol Pashinyan’s formula proposing a final peace over Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) dangerously undermines Armenia’s positions in the ongoing negotiation process, the National Agenda party says in a statement.

Commenting on the prime minister’s United Nations address, members of the recently launched political force warn of potential hazards linked to attempts to bring the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides’ positions into an unfair balance (given that Azerbaijan, as the side  which unleashed the hostilities in the early independence period, suffering eventually a crucial defeat, was able to defend its freedom only “at the price of losses”).

In his speech at the UN General Assembly’s 74th session, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said any solution to the long-stranding dispute must be acceptable to both Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and the people of Azerbaijan.

Noting that Artsakh was never a part of the independent Azerbaijani statehood, National Agenda calls attention also to that country’s persistent attempts to seek its annexation (thus ruling out any peaceful settlement plan).

It also refers to the repeated ceasefire violations and acts of frontline sabotage, which culminated in the April 2016 heavy offensives.

The party calls upon the Armenian authorities to abandon the “defeatist agenda” and move instead to reaffirming the long established reality (in collaboration with the Artsakh partners) that the country’s secession from Azerbaijan is an irreversible process "based on the rights to freedom and self-determination of people" (as an irreversible precondition to a final settlement).
