‘No conspiracies’ in Karabakh peace process - Nikol Pashinayn

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Sunday hit back at critics accusing him of speculations over Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), elaborating on his personal observations on the recent developments in the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process.

Agreeing that the relations with Azerbaijan have been always full of hazards, the premier said he doesn’t absolutely think that the risks are now higher than they used to be 3-5 years ago. “A monitoring of the situation along the border would reveal that tension has dropped sharply and essentially,” he said in a Facebook live, attributing the relative calm to the non-formal talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Dushanbe, Tajikistan last September.  

But Pashinyan admitted that the cross-border skirmishes still continue, leading at times also to casualties.

Reiterating his earlier call for a settlement “acceptable to all the parties”, the premier also emphasized his strong focus on the interests of the Armenia. “My task at the negotiating table deals with searching and finding a solution acceptable to Armenia - and the Armenian people. So only after we arrive at such a solution at the negotiating table, will I present it to the society to open the way for a nationwide debate and a decision-making in a nation-wide format,” he added.

Addressing the speculations over “controversies” between the authorities of Artsakh and Armenia, the prime minister said the two countries share “identical” positions on the issue. “It isn’t possible otherwise. No speculations are possible over the topic. I often hold discussion on the issue with President Bako Sahakyan of Artsakh,” he added.
