'I was jailed and released in politically motivated probe', says former parliament staffer

A former Armenian parliament official facing prosecution in connection with abuse of authority, insists that the criminal case against him is fabricated and politically motivated.

Arsen Babayan, who served as a deputy chief of staff at the National Assembly, on Tuesday dismissed the legitimacy of the criminal case accusing him of usurpation of power and complicity in similar affairs. In an interview with Armnnews TV Channel hours after his release, he cited the Law on Amnesty as a sufficient guarantee potentially precluding a prosecution against a former governmnent official over an ascribed crime of official fraud. ″But the inquest body did not absolutely care about that,″ Babaayan said.

He added that he doesn't possess any substantial proof or fact arousing a justified suspicion over an alleged crime. Babayan said he even sees specific case records proving his innocence.

″I was jailed and released through a political decision. All that was directed against Hrayr Tovmasyan, the chair of the Constitutional Court. The authorities' policies leave a kind of impression as though they are just making certain attempts - unsure about the final outcome. This case does not have any future at all, as the process of detention was illegitimate indeed. That kind of step was made in an effort to exert pressure against Hrayr Tovmasyan,″ Babayan said.

″If they [the authorities] were expecting a false testimony potentially enabling them to realize political objectives, it was initially clear then that nothing of the kind was going to happen,″ Babayan said, insisting on the illegitimacy of the entire proceeding.
