Regional developments ‘no reason for joy or grievance’ – politician

The regional developments do not offer us any ground to feel rejoiced or disappointed, as we need a cool judgement to eventually realize that superpowers are governed by their own interests, the director of the Yerevan-based International Center for Human Development said Thursday, commenting on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s recent visit to Armenia.  

“Lavrov’s statement in Yerevan sounded pleasing to the ear indeed, as he addressed the developments in a kind of positive light, making references to the prime minister. Yet we shouldn’t forget also about the opinions at the Valdai Discussion Club last month, i.e. - that another viewpoint might be voiced about a month later. Everything depends upon processes now. A foreign minister of an [OSCE]  Minsk Group member state will always make positive statements ahead of a visit,” Teven Poghosyan noted.

He also predicted high chances of a specific outcome in the nearest future. “If Azerbaijan appears with a tough-worded statement – without any reaction by Lavrov – then we will need to develop a kind of cool-headed reaction to statements of the kind, focusing on the process.”  

Addressing Turkish President Recept Tayyip Erdogan’s recent visit to Washington, Poghosyan said he expects the strategic allies to use the occasion to relax the existing tension in a way. He called attention to the business-minded approaches pursued by the two countries’ leaders, noting that both Erdogan and US President Donald Trump  give preference to deals promising a maximum advantage.

The politician also called for a priority focus on a simultaneously continuing warfare in the information domain. “We need to develop the kind of society where consolidation keeps us together to prevent enemies, opponents or ill-wishers from spreading hatred in an attempt to split us apart, etc. We need to boost the industries and economic development with the realization that this is a challenge for all of us,” he added.
