US deploying troops to Middle East, 'unable to weaken Iran's influence' – expert
The US plan to send additional 3,000 troops to the Middle is an attempt to strengthen Washington's influence on the region in the light of the Islamic Republic's increasingly strengthening positions in a range of countries, Armen Vardanyan, an expert in Iranian studies, said Saturday, commenting on the Pentagon's recently released statement.
″The United States stopped short of weaking Iran's influence on a number of countries; this is why they are now trying to strengthen their positions by deploying troops to the Middle East. But they are not sure to succeed in their efforts,″ he told Tert.am.
Asked whether the Washington authorities' move may potentially escalate their relations with Iran, the expert cited President Donald Trump's earlier promise to exert unprecedented pressures upon Tehran. He noted that the kind of statement was followed by anti-Iranian sanctions and mediated wars against the Islamic Republic in other states.
″This is actually why pro-Iran forces are often tempted by Iran into attacking US embassies, diplomatic representations and bases,″ he noted.
Addressing the death of Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian major general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Vardanyan said he expects a retaliatory action ″on a third country's territory″.
In his words, the Iranian government will not opt war a direct war, perfectly understanding the serious hazards stemming from the confrontation with the US.
