Armenian government 'not unanimous' on healthcare insurance tax, prime minister says

The Armenian government does not have a unanimous position on the recently intiated tax reforms proposing healthcare benefits to both the employed and unemployed population at the expense of salary deductions, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Wednesday.

″We have outlined the problem, stating clearly that no citizen of the Republic of Armenia should be left stranded at hospital doors. So we are required to resolve a problem to allow our citizens to benefit from proper healthcare [services]. The atmosphere of debates has always dominated the Government, which is really positive. and I do not have a clearly outlined point of view in that connection,″ he told the National Assembly.

Pashinyan's remark came in response to Arkady Khachatryan of the opposition Bright Armenia faction who sought the prime minister's comments and personal opinion on the efficiency of the proposed 6% investment in healthcare insurance.

Pashinyan further referred to the reforms in the profit tax deductions, which he said will continue also this year "to reach the uniform target" of 20%. ″With the revised profit tax effective since January 1, 2020 – plus the increase in the minimum salary rates – an estimated AMD 2,500,000,000-AMD 4,000,000,000 will now be at the [government's] every month. I do believe that our citizens essentially benefited from financial assistance in the past one and a half year,″ he added.
