There is alternative to 'black-and-white' political arena, former national security chief tells Interfax

In an interview with the Russian news agency Interfax, former direcor of the National Security Serrvice (NSS), Artur Vanetsyan, elaborated on his plan to create a political party, admiting that he indends to be an opposition to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government,

″The new party will be in the centre-right political spectrum, with an underlying ideology and program harmoniously intertwining traditions and progress. We are now conducting wide-ranging consultations with co-thinkers and colleaguees and will unveil the clear-cut keynote provisions and ‘roadmap' of future actions only after all the possible discussions. The new political force will be an opposition,″ he noted.

Vanetsyan, who stepped down from office in September, said he sees the current government of Armenia stepping aside from the objectives and plans declared during the ″Velvet Revolution″ two years ago.

Meantime he reiterated his earlier promise for ruling out a ″return to the past″.

Noting that the people who joined the popular movement in 2018 sought justice, improved living standards and quality services in healthcare, education and the social sector, the former NSS director said he now regrets that many promises were left unaccomplished. ″Instead of a broad public consolidation - without which Armenia cannot possibly overcome the threats facing the country and the society - we came face to face with new splits, divisions into 'blacks and whites', the 'old and new', the 'agreeing and not quite agreeing' [masses] that have been relentlessly fighting each other in an atmosphere of a universal hatred. And the impermissibility of this in the national security and defense agencies is an absolutely separate topic,″ he said.

Vanatsyan added that at the time he resigned as the NSS director, the disagreements between him and Pashinyan had reached an ″insurmountable peak″.
