Hraparak: High court judges turn down offer for meeting with authorities

The move by the seven members of the Constitutional Court to reject the legsilative proposal for an early retirment is said to have evoked a deep disappointment in the pro-government team as they not only hoped for resignations until the last moment but also, apparently, intended to negotiate the issue with several judges.

Citing an informed source, the paper says that some high-rankig figures (including heads of electoral headquarters) planned a meeting a those CC members whose resoluteness they did not question at all (these did not, reportedly, include the women judges).

The authorities are thought to have come with the plan for a constitutional referendum not just for conducting a voting as such but for exercising pressure upon the judges. ″The authorities are not virtually inclined to the conduct of this referendum; they needed it to give the judges the clear understanding that they will have, some way or another, to step down in a month's time. And hence their tool to get the matters going well did not work here at all …

″So they will now have to head to a referendum, whose positive outcomes are highly questionable,″ a source familiar with the processes told the paper on Friday.

Asked whether the judges responded to the invitation for a meeting, the sourrce gave a negative reply. ″No, some of the judges did really respond to the authorities' proposals in the past month. On the last day, however, they unanimously refused to react in any way and didn't go to the meeting, thus giving a clear hint that they are not going to offer any concession."
