Pashinyan: Natural gas prices dominated telephone negotiations with Russian leader

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan admitted Monday that the prices of natural gas have always been a sensitive topic in the Armenian-Russian relations giving way to political speculations and at times even to manipulations.

In a Facebook live summing up the past days' foreign and domestic policy developments, Pashinyan said that the issue dominated also the agenda of his telephone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The Armenian government repeatedly used it before - for diffferent political considerations - without taking into account the expediency of pure economic activity. And whenever we encounter situations of the kind today, that's also the aftermath of the unpromising and non-economic policies pursued by former governments," he noted.

Admitting that the effective exploitation of natural gas still remains problematic, Pashinyan said that the Armenian government has now submitted a bid to the Russian Gazprom (on behalf of Deputy Premier Mher Grigoryan), requesting it to consider the possibility of lower tariffs.

As for the expected surge in the consumer bills, the prime minister said he hopes that the Russian president will intervene in the process dealing with Gazprom Armenia's earlier request. "That's because there isn't a proper perception - either by the public or the government - that a decision of the kind can be practically made in a crisis situation as this," he added.

Pashinyan said he also made a proposal for making payments in the Russian currency (instead of the USD Dollar) as a more logical way in the future bilateral transactions. "We are hopeful these negotiations will be a success," he said.
