Prosperous Armenia to dispute constitutionality of decision on public assemblies in times of national emergency

The Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) is going to lodge an appeal with the Constitutional Court asking it to consider the legitimacy of a decision on the conduct of public assemblies in times of national emergency, the political force's press secretary said today.

Iveta Tonyan, a member of the opposition PAP faction in parliament, also elaborated on a plan for creating a commission of experts to study the organizational activities in the fight against the coronavirus disease.

She said they are going to ask lawmakers from the Bright Armenia party to join the initiative "to secure the necessary number of signatures". "We have not conducted any campaign or addressed the people with an appeal or statement, as the population's health matters the most," she told reporters at the National Assembly.

Scores of protesters gathered outside the National Security Service (NSS) late on Tuesday, while the party's leader, Gagik Tsarukyan, was being questioned as part of a criminal probe accusing the businessman-turned-politician of tax evasion, electoral abuses and corruption. Tsarukyan personally dismisses the allegations as politically motivated.

Vahe Enfiajyan, a National Assembly vice speaker affiliated with the second largest parliamentary bloc, said thousands of Armenian citizens recently visited them to express support to the PAP  and its leader. Insisting that those people "observed all the protective measures", the lawmaker complained that they were nonetheless taken to the police, "often being subjected to excessive force"."Under conditions of the coronavirus in Armenia, we are recording aggravating paces, being the worst-affected country in the region. Our faction will embark on creating a commission to conduct comprehensive debates, calling to accountability all those who lack the necessary capacities or have failed," he added.
