Armenia needs 'broader nationwide consensus'  30 years after Declaration of Independence - National Agenda party

The National Agenda party has raised the urgency of revising Armenia's Declaration of Independence adopted 30 years ago, calling for stronger efforts to make it a fundamental basis of a solid nationwide consensus.

In a statement on Monday, it congratulated the nation on the remarkable anniversary, stressing the importance of embarking on future steps to elaborate a new and more comprehensive document.

"On August 23 thirty years ago, the Supreme Council of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia, which became the founding legal document of our newly independent state, covering the main principles and values of our state-building.

"The Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia is an exceptional document - in terms of both content and by virtue of the fact the fact of stemming from a real nationwide consensus - to lay the foundations of re-establishing our independent statehood. Though not all the assigned objectives have been realized yet, it s possible to state at the same time that it has fulfilled its main role as a founding document of the independent Republic of Armenia.

"It is now time to embark on the elaboration of a new, more comprehensive document which, having its basis in Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia, will reflect a broader nationwide consensus and be aimed, at least in a 100 year perspective, at the unification of two Armenian states into a single statehood, the eradication of the consequences of the Armenian Genocide and dispossession and, in the long run, also the predetermination of the main trends of the one-time powerful Armenian civilization, and reinstatement of glory.

"Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Armneia! Glory to the free and independent Republic of Armenia!" reads the statement.
