Current Armenian authorities 'act in breach' of our vital existential formula - Karen Bekaryan

These authorities have opted for the method of violating our key existential formula: the Republic of Armenia cannot possibly - and must not - build its foreign policies at the expense of a conflict of interests among the power centers, political analyst Karen Bekaryan said in his recent televised broadcast aired by ArmNews TV Channel.

Highlighting the accentuated anti-Russian tone in Nikol Pashinyan's recent article (in his analysis entitled The Origins of the 44-Day War, the prime minister hinted the likelihood of implicit Russian calls for unilateral concessions over Nagorno-Karabakh), he also called attention to the National Security Council chief's prompt action to extend congratulations to the newly appointed US National Security Adviser (who is going to serve in President Joe Biden's administration) and the gesture of gratitude to the United States for engagement in different phases of the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) peace process (including in matters dealing with the country's status). "Where have you seen anything of the kind? Was it in [former President Donald] Trump's statement?" he asked.

To understand Washington's behavior - and consequently also work - before and during the recent war, the analyst also referred to Trump's statement - made in the most heated period of the hostilities (when civilian settlements were under fire) - praising the "successful" US mediation in establishing ceasefire between the conflicting sides.

"Can you possibly imagine the kind of inaction? And now they are making attempts to take certain actions after Biden's inauguration. It is a little bit difficult to understand them relying on a simple logic," he noted.

As another interesting element in the entire process, Bekaryan cited the reported plans to appoint Lilit Makunts, the leader of the ruling My Step faction in the National Assembly, as Armenia's new ambassador in Washington.

"A person who has absolutely no connection with diplomacy is going to be actually installed - at least she didn't deny it - as the ambassador of Armenia in a country which is a Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group and a permanent member in the UN Security Council," he said.

Bekaryan also pointed out the attempts to intensify the US engagement in the process against the backdrop of provoking anti-Russian sentiments.

Re-emphasizing the importance of building foreign policies "in the domain of interests", he also warned of the heavy burden for Armenia stemming from a conflict of interests between Moscow and Washington.

"That golden formula is now being breached before our eyes," he said, warning also of the incumbent prime minister's apparent effort to make Armenia "an object of bargaining for his own salvation".
