'Will Biden recognize the Genocide?': Expert hints tips for Armenian authorities

International expert Suren Sargsyan has prompted the likelihood of the United States' move to eventually recognize the Genocide under President Joe Biden, proposing steps for the Armenian government to achieve the desired outcome.

In a public post on Facebook, he highlighted, in particular, the "least constraints" for Biden "compared to any other predecessor". Sargsyan also outlined several major factors, which he considered vital:

1. The United States' relations with Turkey are tense;

2. The Turkish aggression, and enaggement in the Aertsakh war is obvious to Washington;

3. It is necessary to give something to the defeated side while also "pressuring" Turkey;

4. The Obama-Biden pair gave - yet fell short of keeping - a promise to the Armenian community several years ago;

5. That promise is in place also today amid the community's pressure;

6. There are the Congress chamber resolutions on recognition, to which Biden can make reference;

7. Biden's congressional team has voted in support of recognition;

8. Biden is well aware of the Armenian Cause;

9. Most importantly, there is no Armenian-Turkish "reconciliation" process.  

Tips for the Armenian government to follow:

1. Turkey will obviously launch a lobbyist and diplomatic campaign in Washington starting from February. We too, must launch a campaign in aid of the lobbyists, and the community. If we are not able to offer aid, we need, at least, to avoid interfering with their efforts.

2. We must not, under any circumstances, yield to Turkey's pressures or be allured by Turkey in other words until the 24th of April.

3. Should any Turkish-Armenian process get under way, Biden will avoid recognition on such grounds as that will be an impeding factor for him. And that's what the Turks need. And this is actually why we occasionally hear statements coming from Ankara.

4. [The Armenian leader] should call Biden to thank him for his position on the recognition.

5. Avoid replacing the ambassador at such a responsible moment.

"A question will arise as to why we need at all to concentrate on Genocide recognition in such a catastrophic period. The answer is obvious. Recognition amounts to not only the reinstatement of historical justice but also to a political assessment. For us, it marks the closure of a cycle in Washington, enabling us to centralize the entire resource on Armenia and Artsakh," Sargsyan wrote.
