Kocharyan 'determined' to join snap elections despite 'visible dangers'

Second President Robert Kocharyan on Wednesday expressed his resolute willingness to join a campaign for snap parliamentary elections, warning at the same time of "visible dangers" stemming from such processes (if initiated).

In an interview with several local media outlets, the former president said he has also called upon his co-thinkers to take an active part in the political processes.

Asked why the opposition fell short of rallying big crowds of people for the anti-government protests in the past months, Kocharyan said he doesn't find that the campaign didn't succeed. "The issue is whether the government change process will be a legitimate one or will be achieved through revolutionary methods. The alternative of the first week [campaign] consisted exactly in that. If those people had a love and stigma a little bit, they should themselves have asked for a revolution and stepped down, whereas a legitimate process is a very easy one. If 25 lawmakers had a little bit patriotism, they would have left [the ruling parliamentary]  faction to pave the way for the platform that the 17 [opposition political] forces would have opted for. But those lawmakers never did that. The authorities must be happy at least that there is such a political process, because if all the hopes fade away, other process will come up," the ex-president noted.  

In his words, the alliance of 17 parties attempted but didn't succeed to oust Pashinyan through legitimate methods "due to a failure to rally enough supporters". Kocharyan also noted that the temptation to realize the process constitutionally was really great. "I am not simply involved in all that, but to the best of my understanding, this process will continue, and this is actually why the authorities have started talking about early elections," he added.
