Zhoghovurd: 'Hidden message' behind Russian ambassador's unprecedented activity

The Russian Ambassador's increased activity in the recent period has caught the media attention.

In the past week alone, Sergey Kopirkin was reported to have held meetings with the heads of the opposition parliamentary factions, as well as the National Assembly's speaker and even the first president of Armenia.

Commenting on the kind of unprecedented frequency of dialogues with different political figures, the paper claims that the meetings contain an "implicit message" underscoring Russia's role as a key actor in the OSCE Minsk Group mission in the process of negotiating peace over Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

The paper says it revealed, after a small study, that public negotiations with senior representatives of the other co-chairing states have been "less frequent" over the period. It refers, particularly, to the meeting held between the US, French and Russian ambassadors to Armenia and the foreign minister, as well as the US ambassador's subsequent private talks with the chairman of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Defense and Security. Both official events were held on January the 20th.

Also another meeting - between French Ambassador Jonathan Lacôte and Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan - took place the very next day.

The paper notes that the Russian ambassador remains the most active diplomat in Armenia, having already managed to meet with several politicians even twice over the period (including with first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan). 

Kopirkin was apparently active also in the post-war period, as the other ambassadors started making more frequent public appearances only after the New Year holidays. Notably, Russia has been increasingly active also in the South Caucasus over the recent months, says the paper, commenting on the latest developments.
