We will run for elections ‘in the person of Pashinyan’, justice minister says
Armenia’s minister of justice on Monday unfolded the agenda of snap parliamentary elections, expressing the ruling political team’s strong determination to run for parliament "in the person of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan".
Rustam Badasyan also ruled out any obstacles to the plans for holding the vote on the June 20, admitting at the same time the real need to complete the electoral reforms “with maximum rapid efforts”.
The minister said they expect to ensure the 100% proportional representation system by the assigned date, agreeing that the “rating system” is not perceived as the most convenient model by either the civil society or the public at large. “For a country like ours, a purely proportional representation system is more conducive to a more correct - and a political - debate. So we are continuing the discussions to that effect,” he told journalists at a press briefing.
Badasyan also questioned the expediency of the call for "waiting six months" after the adoption of an amended Electoral Code, insisting on a dominating consensus among the political forces. “I don’t think it makes the political system unpredictable in any way,” he said, downplaying the criticism that Pashinyan, as the ‘symbol of defeat’, could be replaced by another candidate.
