Had He Been Alive, National Hero Vazgen Sarkissian Would’ve Been 51 Today

Today is the 51st anniversary of Vazgen Sarkissian’s birthday. Awarded with the highest title in the Republic of Armenia (“National Hero of Armenia”), well-known political figure Sarkissian held different positions in his lifetime — Defense Minister, Prime Minister — and had an invaluable investment in the process of army- and state-building.

Since his assassination in Armenia’s National Assembly on October 27, 1999, every year on March 5, a series of events are organized — attended by representatives from both opposition parties and the ruling authorities — to pay tribute to his memory.

At 10 am today, many former freedom-fighters and a group of high-ranking military staff of the Republic of Armenia visited Vazgen Sarkissian’s memorial in Yerablur Pantheon placing a wreath on his burial vault.
