Armenian National Congress Preparing First Pan-National Civil Lawsuit in Armenia

The Armenian National Congress (ANC) is preparing to take court action on the recent increase of natural gas prices in Armenia. The ANC’s legal representative, Armen Khachatryan, said that it’s likely they will appeal to the courts during the first week of April.

The necessary forms are already prepared, and those citizens who wish to add their name to the lawsuit can do so by completing them.

“Republic of Armenia citizens who have contracts with ArmRusGasProm can become plaintiffs [in the case]… ArmRusGasProm holds the monopoly in gas in Armenia. ANC is the sponsor of the court action, purely for organizational means. But apart from ANC structures, numerous individual citizens have come and taken blank forms, and NGOs, who likewise assist citizens, have approached us as plaintiffs, so that the process of joining the lawsuit is of an organized nature,” said Khachatryan.

According to Khachatryan, after the March 1 rally, when the ANC announced its intentions to take court action on this issue, numerous citizens called and approached the ANC offices in person, expressing their wish to add their name in the lawsuit.

“It’s the first time that a pan-national court action is being taken in Armenia,” said Khachatryan, adding that everyone can get involved in the process as plaintiffs.
