‘Every Day, Everywhere’: Art Exhibit Goes Beyond Tokenism of International Women’s Day

From March 16 to 26, an art exhibit called “Every Day, Everywhere” will be on display at the Mekhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex and art school in Yerevan.

According to the Facebook event page created by curator Eva Khachatrian, “March 8 is not the only Day of Struggle for Women’s’ Rights.” In fact, the struggle for social, cultural, and political rights takes place on a daily basis, notes the event page, as well as the details posted on Artsnews.am.

Each piece in the exhibit provides a view alien to the patriarchal society. It is another step on the way towards breaking established stereotypes and notions. It is an attempt of working out new forms of communication where women’s speech, opinions and positions are important and significant, reads the event write-up.

“This exhibition is opposed to the depleted traditions of organizing women’s exhibitions and women’s art presentations which are adopted in Armenia and where the majority of participants fully affirm the male gaze…, according to which women are representatives of ‘the softer sex’.

“In contrast to such opinions, the project participants question the social marks of power, authority and women’s role.”

Participting artists include Sona Abgaryan, Susan Amudjanyan, Tsomak, Manan Torosyan, and Karine Matsakyan. The exhibit opens tomorrow at 5 pm.
