History Should be Left Up to Historians: PACE President

History should be left up to historians, since it’s not right for politicians to make decisions on historical issues, said Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who is in Kazakhstan for a four-day visit, in an interview with Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi, referring to the recent decision by Sweden’s parliament (riksdag) to approve a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

The PACE president also didn’t agree with the view that the Swedish riksdag decision was influenced by the passing of a similar bill by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“In accordance with Sweden’s riksdag’s internal regulations, all presented draft bills and proposals must be discussed and put to a vote prior to parliamentary elections. [That’s why] it’s not possible that Sweden had followed [in the footsteps of] the United States in this issue,” said Çavuşoğlu.

The PACE president also said that he was convinced that an Armenian Genocide resolution won’t be approved by the UK’s House of Commons.

“I don’t think that the UK will approve [such] an undesirable decision. I’m saying this, one person, who knows Britain well,” he said.
