US Will Be Waiting for Erdoğan in Washington, April 12-13

The United States expects that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will attend the Nuclear Security Summit to be held in Washington from April 12-13, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton told Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu in a March 28 phone conversation.

According to Turkish Foreign Ministry press secretary Burak Özügergin, the main topic of the phone call was the US congressional resolution recognizing the Armenian Gecnocide.

Furthermore, Özügergin said that Davutoğlu told Clinton that the resolution would harm Turkish-American relations and would undermine efforts aimed at establishing peace in the South Caucasus, should it be put to a full house vote.

“Clinton mentioned that she understands Davutoğlu’s worries and stated that the US administration is against both the decision made in the Committee on Foreign Relations and the [possibility of] putting the decision on the full Congress agenda. Clinton also said that Erdoğan’s visit to Washington from April 12-13 to participate in the Nuclear Security Summit is of great significance in every aspect, and that they will be waiting for Erdoğan in Washington.

Davutoğlu, in turn, said that the issue of Erdoğan’s visit is still being discussed and that a decision will be made in the near future,” said Özügergin.
