Turkey’s Interest in NKR Conflict May Lead to War: Analyst

Turkey today touches upon the topic of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict more than ever which is dangerous and may lead to war, said political analyst Yervand Bozoyan at a press conference today, adding that this conflict is one of the most complicated and is not subject to a quick resolution.

“There are numerous similar conflicts in the world which are resolved at the expense of one side’s [interests] and through war. Today we’ve received a rather serious threat in the NKR [Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh] issue,” said Bozoyan.

Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan, also present at the press conference, said he did not share this view, adding that the probability of a new war over NKR has decreased as some big players have been included in the process.

“The US and Russia want a peaceful resolution to the conflict. At this moment we will not make any concessions as we have our own calculations,” explained Melkonyan.

In reference to Turkey’s ongoing attempts to be included in the NKR settlement process, Melkonyan said that Ankara has always been wanting to become a co-chair state at the Minsk Group and has always wanted to participate in the process.

“It was in the 90s that Turkey wanted to take part in the process more actively; Turkey’s approach on the issue hasn’t changed since ‘93,” said Melkonyan.
